In 2015, UNCW launched the "Like No Other" campaign intending to expand key elements that make the university unique for its students. With over 32,000 donors since the launch of the campaign, the school has reached its goal of $100 million, resulting in the most successful campaign in UNCW history. The promise to expand and enrich the programs does not stop there; UNCW will now be stretching the amount of the original campaign, with a new goal of $125 million.

UNCW’s Centro Hispano is a rapidly growing organization that formed in 2005 to support the Hispanic and Latinx community on campus. Located on the first floor of Fisher University Union (FUU), Centro Hispano offers students a variety of resources, including cultural events, scholarship and FAFSA assistance and volunteer opportunities, among many others.

The group is most known for their beach cleanups each semester. In fall of 2021, they collected over 800 pounds of waste from Wrightsville Beach and the surrounding beaches. Between fall of 2020 and spring of 2021, POP collected 4,122.2 pounds of waste. They also plant one tree for every 25 pounds of trash collected. The group's efforts align with their passion to maintain the ocean and promote an environmentally friendly mission.

UNCW OneCard to switch to mobile application

On Nov. 2, the Student Government Association met to discuss changing the OneCard system from a physical card to a mobile ID. According to director of Auxiliary Services Gino Galutera, the planned changes to OneCard would allow faculty, staff and students to add their OneCard to existing applications such as Apple Wallet and Google Pay. Students could soon start using their OneCard through their phone.

The UNCW Department of Creative Writing is hosting the annual Writers’ Week on Monday, Nov. 1 through Friday, Nov. 5. Students interested in learning about different aspects of the writing community, ranging from an interview with a literary management agent, to learning about printing and participating in a discussion with well-known authors are encouraged to join in the week’s events.

If we were to normalize social interactions between neurotypical children and children with disabilities, these types of interactions would be few and far between rather than the norm. This is because the neurotypical kids will have had experience in interacting with someone with disabilities. This prior experience will undoubtedly play a positive role in the individual’s interactions with the person with the disability.

UNC Wilmington’s creative writing program develops many successful writers, the latest being a recent graduate that just released her first novel. E.J. Schwartz, originally from New Jersey, graduated from UNCW’s MFA program this year. A competitive gymnast and all-star cheerleader turned author, her novel “Before We Were Blue” was published on Sept. 14.
