The award winning off-Broadway play “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf” housed packed audiences last year when the production was brought to UNCW by Kimberly McLaughlin-Smith, coordinator of the university’s Office of Multicultural Affairs. This year the play is returning to UNCW to empower women with a second round of poetry and dance.

The play, labeled by its creator Ntozake Shange as a choreopoem that blends dance and poetry, is a collection of 20 poems spoken by a cast of seven black women. Throughout the play these women are only known by colors and speak about trials of rape, love, abandonment and domestic violence.

Last year’s character of “Lady in Yellow” was held by UNCW senior, Jasmyn Ferbish, who is now casting her previous role.

“I think I would be looking for a young adult who is very mature but also understands the struggles in life and can easily convey that as a woman. Also, someone who is very energetic and loves interacting with people,” said Ferbish.

It was Ferbish’s first time acting in a play as large scale as “For Colored Women…” Her reprisal was given the praise of McLaughlin-Smith and acclaimed by audiences, evident through the three night production having to add a fourth showing due to popular demand.

“She was phenomenal last year, had never acted on this level in her life and she hit a home run,” said McLaughlin-Smith.

This year, the production hopes to bring the joy of the play back to Wilmington and is opening auditions to everyone in the local area.

“My goals are centered in personal growth and development of the cast and all affiliated with the production,” said McLaughlin-Smith. “This material requires so much from all concerned. I have come to know that the road to success is paved by allowing the process to be as organic as possible.”

Auditions will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Dobo Hall 202 and 205, Tuesday April 26th and Wednesday April 27th, respectively.
