It’s Childish Baby

A few weeks ago ACE released their annual student survey for UNCW’s big spring show next semester. Although the list of possible candidates is not quite as flashy as it has been in years past, the survey does offer a wide variety of talented artists across many musical genres and comedic styles. Still, however, one of these performers’ credentials stand far above the rest of the pack. This artist is actor, comedian, writer and musician Donald Glover.

Donald Glover’s fame can be mostly accredited to his portrayal of the character Troy Barnes on the hit NBC comedy series “Community,” but Glover was making millions laugh long before that. His first major contribution to comedy was in 2005 when he got a job writing for John Stewart on “The Daily Show.” Glover did not stay with Comedy Central long though; in 2006 he was scooped up by NBC to write for Tina Fey’s new show “30 Rock.” With Glover’s help, “30 Rock” was nominated for a record 17 Primetime Emmy Awards in the show’s second season, to which Glover directly contributed as the show won two of the awards for writing.

In 2009 Glover left “30 Rock” to begin working on a new pilot with NBC, “Community.” “Community” has now run 57 episodes and is on its third season. Much of the show’s success can be directly credited to Glover as one of the show’s most popular characters. Despite all of his accolades on television, his most impressive feat may be his least known: his rap career under the name Childish Gambino.

Glover released his first mixtapes under the name Childish Gambino in 2008. His music gained a vast amount of popularity in 2010 when he released his first EP titled “Be Alone” which received significant praise from fellow rappers Jay-z and Lil Wayne. This November, Gambino released his first studio album, “Camp,” which has reached as high as number two on Billboard charts as well as the iTunes top purchased albums list. Childish Gambino is now planning a tour commencing in 2012 and we could be one of the lucky schools that gets to see him perform.

Donald Glover is listed on the ACE survey as a comedian. However, when Glover tours he always performs both comedy and music. This would mean that we would be getting to see one of the best young rappers and comedians in the world at the same time for a very minimal cost. I guarantee it will be a unique show that anyone who loves hip-hop and comedy will not soon forget.
