Fashion: It’s not okay, so stop pretending like it is

A lot of women I’ve seen have the problem of wearing leggings as pants, and what’s their excuse: “Because they’re comfortable.”

I’m sorry, but this excuse isn’t good enough for me, or for the public. No one wants to see your undercarriage, especially if it’s hot and you’re sweating.

Leggings are only okay in certain situations: when going to the gym (to actually workout), and when worn with a below-the-bum-line shirt.

There are plenty of comfortable and breathable fabrics out there that can help you when you’re feeling a little constricted in your clothing. For example, at least one of the following should be found in your closet: a pair of form fitting jeans, a pair of loose fitting jeans,  a pair of cords or khakis, a  pair of silk or crepe de chine pants, a pair of dress pants, a pair of a not-too-tight ankle length pants and a pair of patterned or printed pants.

Each of the previous options will allow you to feel comfortable but look fabulous.

Sure leggings can look super cute when worn correctly, but please do not end up a victim of the sheer see-through 80’s throwback disaster many women walk out in.

And to those who think Uggs magically turn you into a sexy snow bunny, you’re wrong. Uggs are meant to be worn with snow gear when the weather is cold.

If it’s December or even November I can understand wearing Uggs with a cute pair of jeans and a scarf. But when I see you out there wearing yoga pants, or God forbid, Soffes, accompanied by pair of Uggs in this Wilmington heat, all I can do is shake my head in shame and pray you don’t get foot fungus.

Lastly I want to address wearing brightly colored or printed underwear underneath light colored or sheer clothing. Once again, no one wants to see all of that. Leave some for the imagination honey.

Of course there is nothing wrong with wearing cute underwear, but please keep it invisible.

There are plenty of outfits in which you could wear neon underwear with if you wanted to, but just don’t let the outfit be sheer, white, tan, beige, or pastel.

If you choose to wear a lace dress and your bra is going to show anyway, try wearing a black bra (assuming the lace is black) so it will blend in with your outfit for a clean and classy look.

If you’re wearing something absolutely gorgeous that is a little skimpy at the top, go for stick-on bra cups. Sure they will be uncomfortable, but if you’re outfit requires it, you must be going to something important so tough it out. You don’t want to look tacky at an event.

When wearing white you have to be careful. Sometimes a nude bra is the best color choice.

And always remember lace bras will show through tight shirts, seamless bras are best when worn with silky fabric and if in doubt go strapless (but don’t forget the double-sided tape for support).
