Dee Jay Silver talks new music, the ACM’s and life as a new dad

Shannon Robinson | Lifestyles Editor

Country music has evolved over the last decade to include more sounds from the rap and pop genres. One DJ is taking advantage of this evolution, creating a whole new subgenre of country music.

As one of the nation’s top touring DJs and producers, Dee Jay Silver has worked with the biggest names in country music, like Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan. He has also played at some of the most well known music festivals and award shows, such as the Academy of Country Music Awards.

In between his time on tour with Jason Aldean, he’ll be bringing his unique music to the stage at Ziggy’s by the Sea this Saturday. The Seahawk had a chance to sit down with him and talk about his music and his upcoming show.

The Seahawk: What got you into DJing?

Dee Jay Silver: My first job was working for this nightclub DJ who sometimes wanted me to cover for him, and it went from there. My first gig was at a Lambda Chi house.

TS: What drew you to remixing the country music genre?

DJS: I grew up listening to country music. It was what I was familiar with. I started DJing in college and I’d play things like Alabama and mix in Run-D.M.C. I always tried to play country, but back then it was taboo.

TS: Have you seen a large market for this type of music? How do people typically respond?

DJS: I’ve done well. If you listen to the songs, they’re not too far from today’s pop music, which is really popular. It brings a different kind of fan base to country music. People who wouldn’t usually listen to country now do. That wasn’t the case five years ago.

TS: I know you produce a lot of music for other artists, but when can fans expect to hear some original stuff?

DJS: I’m actually working on my own album now. I’ve been in the studio producing and cutting tracks. I plan to release the first single at CMA Fest in June.

TS: Speaking of CMA Fest, the ACM’s are this weekend and you have a big lineup planned. What are you most looking forward to?

DJS: I’m excited to see all of my friends I haven’t seen in awhile. This kind of puts country music on a bit of a pedestal for a night, and it’s cool to see my friends get the recognition they deserve. It’s my favorite time of the year.

TS: I read the other day that you recently received some big news. How does it feel knowing you’ll be a dad soon?

DJS: I’m scared to death. My wife and I have been together for about two and a half to three years, and this is what she wanted. I’m definitely excited about it though.

Fans of Dee Jay Silver can catch his show at Ziggy’s this Saturday, April 9. Tickets are on sale on his website or through TicketFly. His debut EP “Country Club” is also available to purchase on iTunes.
