Voters may consider third-party option after presidential debates begin

November is quickly approaching and everyone can feel the heat of this year’s presidential election coming to a head. Everyone is still all over Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump for what they have or have not said throughout their campaigns and the presidential debates. I watched the first debate and found myself to be fairly disappointed with the candidates for different reasons. It just seems like both Clinton and Trump have too many skeletons in their closets for me to look past.

It does appear, however, that some people are choosing to settle with the “better of two evils” because they do not think they have any other choice. I just want to bring attention to the fact that you do not have to vote for either because other parties are running for the presidency besides the obvious two.

I think the public tends to forget that there is one other candidate on the ballot for the presidential election and that is former governor Gary Johnson. He is representing the Libertarian party along with former governor Bill Weld for Vice President.

It really is easy to forget about the mysterious third party option, especially when the media is throwing the Democratic and Republican candidates in your face all day long. But, nevertheless, Gary Johnson is running and you can vote for him.

Gary Johnson actually wrote an article for The New York Times reminding voters that yes, there is a third way and that he too is a viable candidate. He talks about his views and his ideas for the country. No, he is not on the news everyday nor was he represented during the debate a few days ago, but he is still there.

I am not saying that all of his ideas are prefect, but I believe that maybe it is time to consider a “Plan B.” Our country has functioned on this two party system for decades since a third party candidate has never won a presidential election, ever. Maybe that is a sign to us that it is time to consider our other options. It might just be time to bring new ideas and opinions to the table.

The Founding Fathers even said that having two dominant political parties might be a bad idea. President John Adams stated back in 1780, “There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.”

It is looking like maybe he was right all those many years ago. If he and our other Founding Fathers watched the debate the other night I can promise they would not be happy with the way politics have changed.

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump both present positive and negative ideas, but the root of the issue for me is that I, quite frankly, do not trust either of them. As I said before, too many skeletons are hiding in their closets and that makes me nervous as a citizen. Do we really want leaders that spend the majority of their first presidential debate arguing back and forth over who said what like children? I certainly do not and I feel that the majority of the American people do not either.

If you are a Trump or Clinton supporter then fine, but if you are one of those people that are considering “settling,” do not. Look at Gary Johnson and see if he is the kind of man you would like to have run this country. Remember that there is a third choice and that choice may not be a bad one. I suggest looking at his website and also reading his article titled, “Take a Deep Breath, Voters. There is a Third Way.”

You may not love all of his ideas or any of them for that matter, but he is worth looking into. At this point, after everything I have heard this election season, he might be worth a little more consideration.
