Me, myself and I

College is such an interesting time of a person’s life. A lot of us meet lifelong friends, maybe a potential spouse and, not to mention, we gain the education we need to have the careers that we desire. There are so many clubs, sports and tons of social events all the time that some days it feels like it will never end, even if it is all fun and exciting.

We get busy, stressed and overwhelmed. It can be hard to find time for everything and everyone. But it seems like the first person to get the ax when things get tough is yourself. In a way, we all still make time for friends, family, social obligations, school and maybe a part time job, but in between it all, it seems like people forget to make time for themselves.

According to Psychology Today, solitude, or as I like to call it, “me time,” is beneficial for a number of reasons. Some alone time can help you work through difficult problems and it can also give your brain a second to recharge. If you really think about how much you do and how much brainpower it takes, it can really get exhausting.

“Me time” is so important because it gives you a second to breathe and also allows you to unwind a little bit. Everyone is different; maybe unwinding for one person is watching Netflix in bed, while someone else might like to go surfing. Regardless of what it is that helps you enjoy a little time to yourself, make sure you make time for it.

Finals and the end of the semester are approaching quickly, and this time of year everyone gets so stressed and tired. Just remember that it does end and that it will all be okay in the end. Work hard, but at the same time make sure you have time to do the things that are important to you.

“Me time” can be so important to a person’s mental health and overall well-being. I can not speak for everyone else, but I always feel a little less stressed out and overwhelmed if I just take an hour to myself.

I am absolutely not saying that you should not hang out with friends or cut back on the responsibilities you have. Those things are also important, but one of the biggest things people seem to learn from college is how to manage so many things at once, and manage time especially. It is a tough game sometimes to juggle everything that is going on. A little time to sit back and breathe is a good way to handle those struggles.

Just remember, as the semester comes to an end, to take care of yourself over everything else and have time for the things you feel are important and those you need to feel happy. Manage your time wisely, but always make sure one of the things you make is some time for yourself.
