CoverGirl hires first CoverBoy

CoverGirl Cosmetics made a big move in the world of gender equality and I must say that I am impressed. Founded in 1961, CoverGirl has never once had a male representative of the brand in any of their campaigns. James Charles is setting out to change that by becoming the brand’s first CoverBoy.

According to USA Today, Katy Perry, one of CoverGirl’s ambassadors announced via Instagram that she was honored to announce the first ever CoverBoy. 17-year-old James Charles is a social media guru, reported USA Today. As of recently, he has over 860,000 Instagram followers. Not only is he a star on the web, but he is a talented make-up artist as well.

Charles started his career by creating an Instagram account that showcased his talents with make-up. Not only has he taken Instagram by storm, but also The Washington Post reported that Charles is known for making tutorial videos on YouTube for men and women all over the world.

CoverGirl is not wasting any time with their new star. Charles will be the main focus of the brand’s new mascara campaign, “So Lashy”, USA Today reported. Charles got his start in the beauty industry through helping a friend get ready for a school dance, reported The Washington Post. He originally got his start in hair design but fell in love with the art of make-up.

I absolutely cannot explain how much I love this. Hello America, this is huge! Can you imagine a male make-up model a few years ago? This just speaks to the progress the United States and other places around the world are making for gender equality.

Men wearing make-up used to be so socially unacceptable and that is just silly. If you want to wear make-up then wear it. That is your choice as an individual, regardless of your gender. That idea applies for women as well. Just because you are one of those lovely ladies out there, does not mean you have to wear make up. I do not like wearing it personally, so I do not.

I am so glad that people are starting to really embrace themselves as individuals. James Charles is a great example of a person who pursues their dreams, regardless of what social standards dictate. More power to you, James!

I am really excited to see what else is in store from not only Charles, but also from CoverGirl. If they are making this move into hiring men as well as women ambassadors, I hope they continue the trend. It sends a great message about equality and an appreciation for all kinds of people. We need more positive messages like this out their in the media. Maybe some other companies will start following suit.
