Protecting Hollywood, foreigners and the press were the key points in Meryl Streep’s speech at the 74^th Golden Globes Sunday night. “When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose,” Streep said while receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award, an honorary Golden Globe award given each year by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Her speech has been getting attention in the news for being politically charged, particularly at President Elect Donald Trump. Streep did not name him directly, but did condemn actions he took in the previous year.

“There was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good. There was nothing good about it,” she said. “It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back.”

Streep made it clear that she believes the job of the press and entertainers everywhere is to hold leaders accountable and protect those who fight to do just that.

“So I only ask the famously well-heeled Hollywood Foreign Press and all of us in our community to join me in supporting the committee to protect journalists,” she said. “Because we’re going to need them going forward. And they’ll need us to safeguard the truth.”

Other major winners Sunday night include La La Land, which took home seven of the fourteen Golden Globes from the movie category, including Best Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Emma Stone won for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy and kept with the theme of hope and bravery in her acceptance speech.

“To any creative person who’s had a door slammed in their face,” she said. “Or anybody, anywhere, really, that feels like giving up sometimes, but finds it in themselves to get up and keep moving forward, I share this with you.”

Donald Glover won two Golden Globes for his TV show, Atlanta, including Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. In his acceptance speech, he recalled his childhood and first interactions with entertainment.

“My dad used to tell me every day, ‘You can do anything you want.’ And I remember thinking as a kid in 1st grade: ‘You’re lying to me,’” Glover said. “But now I do stuff and he’s like, ‘I didn’t think that was possible.’ So I really want to say thank you to my son and the mother of my son for making me believe in people again and things being possible.”

One of the biggest milestones of the night belonged to streaming television shows on platforms such as Netflix and Hulu. The 2017 Golden Globes were the first time all three of the television Drama Series awards went to streaming shows. Netflix’s The Crown also won Best Drama TV Series, the first time a streaming show has ever taken home this prize.

The Golden Globes had many memorable moments, and at the end of the night, it was all about the art.

“As my friend, the dear departed Princess Leia, said to me once,” Streep said. “Take your broken heart, make it into art.”
