An intentional fire was set in a first floor women’s restroom in Fisher University Union Jan. 23, according to a mass email sent out by the Office of University Relations.

The email said that the UNC Wilmington Police Department is investigating a small fire set on Monday in a Fisher Union women’s restroom.

“The Wilmington Fire Department Fire Marshall’s Office determined that the fire was intentionally set,” the email stated. “The suspect remains at large.”

Other students were actually the ones responsible for finding and putting out the fire as well, according to Assistant Director of Facilities Alan Hinton.

“As far as I know,” said Hinton, “there’s video of them actually putting out the fire.”

According to the UNCW Police Department’s crime log, the case of “arson” is currently under further investigation and was started by unknown individuals who “set fire to [a] toilet paper dispenser.”

“We are looking into the case,” UNCW Police Department Chief Chris Bertram said, “but there are no suspects at this time.  A roll of toilet paper was set on fire resulting in approximately $250 in damage.”
