UNC Wilmington’s College of Arts and Sciences hosted its second Annual Homecoming 5K and 1 Mile Run on Sat., Feb. 4.

It was a brisk 30 degrees outside in the morning. Some people came dressed in tutus, others in “USA” gear. But all were ready to run.

CAS is the largest college at UNCW, made up of 25 departments from the arts to mathematics and sciences.

CAS is proud to support and encourage students to take part in applied learning. This includes internships, undergraduate research, and capstone projects. All proceeds from the race support the expenses of these hands-on experiences.

Donations were provided by some of the sponsors, including Whole Foods Market, Harris Teeter, Port City Java and the UNCW Bookstore.

The 5K run was a flat course that looped around the perimeter of UNCW’s campus.

The mile run started at 8 a.m. and finished before the 5K started at 8:30 a.m. Awards followed the races.

For the 5K, 205 runners finished the course.

Students, Wilmington locals and faculty members participated in the race. Even Sammy C. Hawk and Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli made an appearance at the homecoming week event.

It was the first kickoff event of the Saturday Homecoming festivities.
